More than 40 bicyclists gathered at Mile 0 of the Montour Trail on April 30 for Archangel Gabriel Parish’s second annual bicycle blessing. The event kicks off the 2022 season for Gabe’s Riders, a group of bicyclists from the parish, of all ages and abilities, who gather for a weekly ride.
Organized by Deacon Tim Killmeyer, Gabe’s Riders evolved from a cycling group that began at Holy Trinity Parish in 2006 as a way for people to get in shape, learn technique, and build endurance.
“We would start in March,” said Deacon Tim, “riding every Saturday, slowly building up miles with the promise that by June people would be able to ride 30 miles comfortably. We had men and women, kids in grade school, senior citizens, all join us. Some were experienced cyclists, and some were newbies. Friendships grew among the group, and we decided to continue.”
When the parishes merged, Deacon Tim saw an opportunity to use the group as a way to bring people together, so the "Trinity Trail Trekkers" became the "Roc-Ken-Ro Riders," who later became "Gabe's Riders" once the parish received its new name.
Gabe’s Riders meet on Saturdays at 10:00 AM at Mile 0 of the Montour Trail, and they invite anyone who is interested to join them. There is no cost to participate. Just show up with your bike and be ready to ride.
